A “Brotherhood city” agreement was signed between the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and the city of Skopje in North Macedonia. Stating that they will build a park in Skopje in the first place and that they want its name to be Atatürk, President Tunç Soyer said, “Today is our holiday. Welcome to your and our Izmir. I am very happy and proud to be able to transfer the brotherhood from centuries ago to the next generations.”

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality signed a “sister city” agreement with the city of Skopje in North Macedonia. Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska, Ministry of Foreign Affairs İzmir Representative Ambassador Naciye Gökçen Kaya, North Macedonia’s Istanbul Consul General Aktan Ago, CHP deputies Kani Beko and Kamil attended the signing ceremony hosted by Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center. Okyay Sındır, Konak Mayor Abdul Batur, Gaziemir Mayor Halil Arda, Ödemiş Mayor Mehmet Eriş, CHP İzmir Provincial President Şenol Aslanoğlu, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and Skopje Municipality council members, representatives of Balkan associations and political parties.

The first step is to park
Before the signing ceremony, Mayor Soyer and Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska met with the accompanying delegation. President Tunç Soyer said, “There was a brotherhood that has been going on since our ancestors. Today, we will sign a signature that will entrust that brotherhood to future generations. This brotherly relationship will make it possible to take care of each other more in good times and bad. İzmir is already a city where most of its population is of Balkan origin. It’s like one of the biggest Balkan cities in the world. We know that this fraternal relationship will further strengthen this identity. We will do much more for our peoples. I know that we will cooperate on many issues, especially young people, on smart cities. But we will start the first step by building a park, and we have only one wish and that is to be named Atatürk.” During the meeting, Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska, who thanked the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality for its assistance to the earthquake area, said, “Our first step is our park and its name is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.”

After the meeting, a signing ceremony was held between the two sides. President Soyer said, “Today is our holiday. Welcome to your and our Izmir. I am very happy and proud to be able to transfer the brotherhood from centuries ago to the next generations. Welcome, welcome,” he said.

Arsovska: “We will strengthen our brotherhood”
Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska said, “The peoples of Turkey and Macedonia have been brothers throughout history. Izmir and Skopje are two metropolitan cities that feel each other. Thanks to this agreement, we will strengthen our brotherhood. We will be together in good times and bad. There is so much space for us to collaborate. We will achieve these things with Tunç President. It is a great honor for us to make a sister municipality agreement.”
