A protocol was signed between the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and the Chamber of Civil Engineers İzmir Branch for the fieldwork of the building preliminary examination initiated to ensure that İzmir residents have an idea about the earthquake resistance of the building they live in. Mayor Tunç Soyer said, “No work is as important as making the city resilient.”
The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality signed a protocol with the Chamber of Civil Engineers İzmir Branch for the fieldwork of the building preliminary examination, which started to receive applications on March 1. Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the Egemenlik Evi Kemeraltı Meeting Hall, Mayor Tunç Soyer stated that this work for building-based preliminary assessment should be an example for Turkey, “It is a work that everyone needs everywhere. Turkey is a country on fault lines. What should we do? The reality of earthquakes is always before us. But we witness with regret that the necessary sensitivity has not been developed on this issue. The necessary work is always postponed. The destructiveness of earthquakes seems to be ignored,” he said.
Mayor Soyer emphasized the importance of safe buildings, saying that they had also learned from what had happened: “This is a prioritization issue. We strive to enter the Green Cities network, the Cittaslow network, but none of them are as important as making this city resilient. If people do not have confidence in their living spaces in this city, if they have concerns about the buildings they live in, no matter how much you talk about digital technology or greenery.”
“The work is being taken as an example” Eylem Ulutaş Ayatar, the President of the Chamber of Civil Engineers İzmir Branch, also said that it was a proud moment for them to be involved in the work aimed at making the city more resilient.
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer and Chamber of Civil Engineers İzmir Branch President Eylem Ulutaş Ayatar signed the prepared protocol. Within the scope of the study, 60 civil engineers will work in the field, and a group of 5 civil engineers will be involved in coordination.
Individual applications can be made Since the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality started the building preliminary examination to ensure that İzmir residents have an idea about the building they live in, 4,500 applications have been made so far. Citizens will benefit from this service free of charge. The Municipality also relaxed the condition that an unanimous decision be taken by the management board in apartment buildings for applications. According to this, individual applications will also be valid without a management board decision.
