Pregnancy is a special period during which expectant mothers experience intense physical and emotional changes. In this process, exercise plays a crucial role for both the mother’s and the baby’s health. Op. Dr. Uzay Lebe, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Batıgöz Health Group Balçova Surgical Medical Center, explained the importance of exercise during pregnancy and the precautions to be taken.
Op. Dr. Uzay Lebe stated that regular exercise during pregnancy can ease the birth process and help expectant mothers feel better, saying, “Exercise helps control weight throughout pregnancy, alleviates back and lower back pain, improves sleep quality, and physically prepares the body for labor. However, before starting an exercise program, you should definitely consult your doctor and create a plan suitable for your health condition.”

Which Exercises Should Be Preferred?
Dr. Lebe emphasized that expectant mothers should choose exercises that make them feel comfortable and are suitable for the pregnancy period. Some recommended exercises are:
Walking: Regular walking at a light pace supports physical health and reduces stress.
Swimming: Expectant mothers feel lighter in water, making swimming an ideal exercise. It supports joint health and relieves back pain.
Pregnancy Yoga: Yoga, combining breath and movement, prepares the body for birth and provides mental relaxation.
Pilates: Pilates, which strengthens pelvic floor muscles, alleviates back pain while improving posture.
Low-Intensity Aerobics: Modified low-intensity movements may be preferred for those who practiced aerobics before pregnancy.
Dr. Lebe emphasizes the importance of listening to the body and avoiding excessive effort during exercise: “If you experience symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, or abdominal pain during exercise, stop immediately and consult your doctor. By doing safe exercises throughout your pregnancy, you can support both your health and your baby’s health.”
