These threats, which are rapidly increasing in number and occur through unauthorized access to the hardware system, pose a risk to the security, reliability and sustainability of the business. Although the industry has focused on software and cloud security in recent years, cybercrime actors take advantage of hardware vulnerabilities to carry out attacks.

UPSs provide backup power to a wide variety of applications, mission-critical infrastructures and IT systems in diverse environments such as hospitals and manufacturing facilities. Cyber security violations at these points threaten social and economic sustainability, while causing financial burden and loss of reputation for the relevant companies. At the same time, it poses a risk for both the UPS and the system it is connected to in case of any security vulnerability. Therefore, it is important to provide a high level of cyber security for all UPSs. Research shows that 63% of companies experience hardware-related security problems.

Preventing security breaches is possible with an architecture that will provide end-to-end reliability, by preventing fake UPS accessories and malicious hardware software. In this context, there is a need for a system that will prevent the use of unauthorized and counterfeit parts or accessories to the UPS system during the installation of power and battery modules, which are important for the development of UPS systems. At the same time, such a system protects against the downloading of malware to hardware, which is the most common method cybercriminals use to gain access to the system.

To address these critical needs, Schneider Electric is introducing the APC Smart-UPS Modular Ultra series with three new levels of cybersecurity to supplement existing features. Smart-UPS units can be connected to Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxureTM IT monitoring platform, which provides remote monitoring and maintenance via the cloud. Thus, the APC Smart-UPS Modular Ultra Series provides multiple levels of security that can help prevent cybersecurity breaches that create a high financial burden and loss of trust.
