2023 World Sports Capital Konya hosted the Konya 2023 Karate 1 Series A Competitions organized by the Turkish Karate Federation with the participation of 1,073 athletes from 76 countries and the match where the A National Handball Team defeated Luxembourg in the Men’s EURO 2024 Qualifications.
Konya Governor Vahdettin Özkan and Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay, who participated in the final stage of the karate tournament, presented their medals to the top athletes. Noting that they successfully completed the organization within the framework of the pre-planned planning, Mayor Altay said that Konya has now shown that competitions of this nature can be held not only in Turkey but also in the world; He said that such organizations will make a significant contribution to the promotion and tourism of Konya.

Organized by the Turkish Karate Federation, Konya 2023 Karate 1 Series A Competitions were held between March 10-12, hosted by Konya Metropolitan Municipality. Governor of Konya Vahdettin Özkan, Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay and President of Turkish Karate Federation Aslan Abid attended the final program of the organization and presented their medals to the top athletes.

Expressing his views after the medal ceremony, Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they hosted an important organization in Konya at a time of pain, and wished God’s mercy to all citizens who died in the earthquake and a speedy recovery to the injured.
Noting that they successfully completed the organization within the framework of the pre-planned planning, President Altay said, “Our athletes competed intensively with the organization of Turkish Karate Federation, Ministry of Youth and Sports and Konya Metropolitan Municipality. We hosted 1,073 athletes from 76 countries in our city. It was a very important opportunity for the promotion of Konya. We attach great importance to the memory of our city with good feelings in the minds of our young people.

Recalling the exemplary hosting of the 2022 Islamic Solidarity Games last year, President Altay said, “Konya became the World Sports Capital in 2023. In this sense, we will host many national and international competitions. Konya has shown that competitions of this nature can be held not only in Turkey but also in the world. It has turned into a city that organizes events that everyone appreciates. I hope that it will make a very important contribution to the promotion and tourism of Konya. I would like to thank everyone who contributed. I wish a lifetime of success to the athletes who sweat in the competitions. I would like to thank all Konya for their qualified hosting. Konya has now become a city ready for the Olympics with its facilities and organizational ability. Everyone has a great job in this. I wish our success to be permanent.”
The National Team completed the 2023 Karate 1 Series A Competitions in Konya with a total of 13 medals.
KONYA BRINGS SUCCESS TO NATIONAL TEAMS
On the other hand, Konya hosted another important match at the weekend. Competing in the Men’s EURO 2024 Qualifying Group 1, A National Men’s Handball Team faced Luxembourg in Konya in the fourth match of the group. The national team won the match played at the Selcuklu International Sports Hall 31-20.
CAPTAIN CEMAL KÜTAHYA REMEMBERED IN THE EARTHQUAKE
A plaque was presented to the athlete’s brother, Gözde Kütahya, by the Governor of Konya Vahdettin Özkan, the Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay and the Head of the Handball Federation Uğur Kılıç in memory of the National Team Captain Cemal Kütahya and his family, who lost their lives in the earthquake before the match. A minute’s silence was held for those who lost their lives in the earthquake before the match, while the A National Team players came out with the name of Cemal Kütahya announced.
