The Evolution of Art program hosted international painter Vladimir Topal in its 74th episode. Moderated by Günsu Saraçoğlu, the interview featured an in-depth conversation about the artist’s life story, education years, perspective on art, and his current exhibition.
Who is Vladimir Topal?
Vladimir Topal was born in 1967 in the village of Kazayak in Moldova, then part of the Soviet Union, and spent his childhood in a rural setting. After completing primary and secondary school, he fulfilled his military service in the Soviet Union. In 1992, he came to Istanbul with a scholarship provided by Turkey, first studying at Marmara University and then at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. He graduated in 1995 and began his master’s studies the same year.
During his education, Topal also studied interior design and decoration in Canada, pursuing both interior architecture and painting simultaneously. While he regarded interior architecture as a profession that supported him economically, painting always remained his true identity.

Identity and Roots in Art
Of Gagauz origin, Topal states that he began to embrace his identity more consciously following the assimilation policies of the Soviet era. His paintings prominently feature nature, rural life, human figures, and cultural symbols. The rural life and nature observations from his childhood are strongly reflected in his works.
Exhibition at Evrim Art Gallery
The artist currently has a solo exhibition at Evrim Art Gallery in Istanbul, featuring 43 works. The exhibition primarily focuses on themes of nature landscapes and rural life. Topal emphasizes that his paintings reflect not only the landscapes he sees but also his inner world and perspective. He conveys the colors of nature onto the canvas in different tones through his own interpretation.
He notes that he prepared this exhibition also inspired by environmental debates taking place in Ontario, Canada. For him, nature is not only an aesthetic subject but also a shared heritage that must be protected.

Encounters with International Audiences
Vladimir Topal has presented his works to art lovers in different countries. His exhibition in Toronto, which was themed around Gagauz folklore, sparked many questions among audiences unfamiliar with its cultural context, while in his exhibitions in Berlin, he found that viewers were more attuned to the language of art and evaluated his works with a deeper understanding.
As an artist nourished by his roots and enriched by international experiences, Vladimir Topal brings together nature, humanity, and cultural identity in his paintings. His artistic journey encompasses a multi-layered story stretching from the Soviet Union to Turkey, from Canada to Europe.
His solo exhibition at Evrim Art Gallery will remain open to visitors until October 2.
