The culture and arts program “Rengârenk”, produced and hosted by Zehra Aksoy, welcomed one of Turkey’s most prominent violin virtuosos, Sercan Birol, in its first episode. Held at the venue of the Florya and Atatürk Forest Protection, Solidarity and Culture Association (FLODER), the program offered unforgettable moments for art lovers.
“The Artist in Love with His Violin”: Sercan Birol’s Artistic Identity
In a heartfelt conversation during the program, Sercan Birol shared that he was born in 1981 into a family of musicians. He mentioned that his father was a master clarinet artist and that he grew up immersed in music. “I have a musical heritage from my family. My uncles and aunts were also professional musicians,” Birol explained, reflecting on the foundation of his artistic journey. He also shared the story behind being known as “the Artist in love with his violin,” a title he takes great pride in.
The Beginning of His Musical Journey: A Talent Discovered at Age 7
Birol recounted the start of his musical career with the words: “When I was 7, my father gave me a violin and said, ‘It suits you.’ From that moment on, this instrument turned into a passion for me.” The artist recalled his first experience with the violin clearly, emphasizing how he grew up watching his family members play and how those moments left a profound impact on him. He mentioned receiving his first lessons from family members before later developing his skills through professional training.

A Versatile Musician: The Journey with Piano and Oud
In addition to the violin, Birol shared that he is also interested in instruments such as the piano and the oud. “I first received piano training,” he said, “but the sound of the violin captivated me more.” He revealed that he taught himself how to play the oud entirely on his own: “The oud is a special instrument for me. I spent long hours trying to master it,” he said, demonstrating his boundless love for music. Birol added that exploring different instruments gave him new musical perspectives and greatly enriched his artistry.
Unforgettable Stage Memories: A Musical Dialogue with ‘Fedon Baba’
Recalling one of the most memorable moments of his career, Birol shared an experience with Fedon, a master of Greek music: “The solo improvisations I did on stage with Fedon Baba are still vivid in my memory. He had worked with my father for 34 years, and I used to join them during rehearsals from a very young age.” Birol described this musical dialogue as a turning point in his life, saying, “That energy and love for music carried me to where I am today.” He also mentioned that his passion for Greek music flourished during this time and emphasized that this cultural connection was a legacy passed down from his father.

Musical Challenges and Achievements: The Nihavent Saz Semaisi
Speaking about the most challenging piece in his career, Birol discussed Nihavent Saz Semaisi by Kemanî Tatyos Efendi: “This piece is a massive repertoire filled with 32nd and 16th notes. It took me months to master, but now it’s a staple in my concerts!” He explained that he spent days rehearsing to be able to perform this difficult composition, and when he finally succeeded, he felt a great sense of fulfillment. Birol emphasized the importance of musical discipline, stating, “True success comes from overcoming challenges.”
Golden Advice for Young Musicians
Addressing young musicians, Birol offered valuable guidance for appreciating classical music:
- “First and foremost, it’s essential to receive solid Western music training.”
- “They should work with good teachers, especially those who specialize in violin.”
- “They should frequently listen to foreign classical works and stay open to different music genres.”
Birol concluded with an inspiring message: “Playing an instrument requires patience and discipline. Take the right steps to improve yourself—and never give up.”

Future Dreams and Projects
Sercan Birol shared his dreams for the future with these heartfelt words: “There’s a stage I even see in my dreams—giving a concert under my own name at the Harbiye Open-Air Theater. ‘Sercan Birol’ will be written backstage, and I’ll be performing in front of thousands.” He also announced exciting news about an upcoming single and music video, adding, “Preparations for my third project are underway—we’re working on a reinterpretation of a traditional folk piece.”
Unforgettable Moments from the Program
One of the most striking parts of the program was Sercan Birol’s live performance of his own composition “Ayrı Dünyalar” and pieces by violin virtuoso Aydar Tati. Birol seemed completely united with his violin during the performance, earning a strong round of applause from the audience. Host Zehra Aksoy remarked, “You grow into a giant on stage,” to which Birol replied, “Music is a way of life for me. On stage, I feel truly free.”
