Don’t go where the algorithm takes you!
Journalist Melih Bayram Dede’s book “Technology and Life” has been published by Liz Publishing. In the 126-page book, the author deals with the development of technology and its social effects in our lives. Bringing a new interpretation to these developments with different perspectives, Melih Bayram Dede draws attention to aspects of technology that have not been explained until now.
In the book, the impact of social media companies’ policies on society is questioned under topics such as ‘Don’t go where the algorithm takes you’, ‘Being a victim of perception management while searching for information’ and ‘Avarice for profit undermines privacy’.
Dark room of the digital world: Social media
The side effects of individuals’ use of social media are also discussed under titles such as ‘Trolling tendency’ and ‘Is social media free from good manners?’. The author summarizes the following views in the book: “Social media companies have become the forces that shape the memory of almost all of humanity with artificial intelligence-supported algorithms. With their opaque algorithm policies, social media companies are mentally transforming the world while deciding what to highlight and what to put in the background. .
The rules of the digital world determine our future!
Today, our opinions are determined by the content that falls into our timeline on social media. Unintended, uncontextual content shapes our judgments about an event, a subject, and a community over time, without our noticing it. These platforms, which have become social communication, life, entertainment and at the same time business tools, decide what, how and when we will do, and force billions of people to act, live and produce content in the ways they determine.”
Who will decide the truth?
Stating that the unlimited authority to remove content to be given to state institutions under the name of combating disinformation, Dede defends the following views: “In an order where only the states can decide what the truth is, ‘truth’ can become something that can be bent and twisted. This may appear as a perception management activity for the public, rather than protecting the public from disinformation. Therefore, we are faced with an open-ended mechanism. The solution is to establish a mechanism that is transparent and does not hide information from the public. Structures with unclear powers and boundaries and without transparency may set out with the claim of combating disinformation and become devices that strike a blow to the public’s freedom of information and expression.”
