THE “HIGH SPEED MACHINE” MAKE THE DEMAND FOR TIRES CREATED BY WORLD’S LEADING TRACKS LIKE NÜRBURGRING, UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF THE R&D CENTER IN MILAN
Pirelli will be able to test tires at speeds up to 500 km/h under controlled conditions, thanks to a new device called the High Speed Test Machine, which it has installed at its research and development center. These tests are mainly aimed at increasing the safety of the tires used in the world’s fastest cars. With the rapid growth of hypercars hitting the road and the latest electric motors becoming more sophisticated, high speeds are playing an increasingly important role in the development of various tire types, from motorsports to road tyres.
The new 500 km/h High Speed Test Machine sits next to two other instruments at Pirelli’s closed test facility at Milan Bicocca headquarters, which can reach speeds of 370 km/h and 450 km/h, respectively. While the two existing devices are used for road tire tests, the new 500 km/h machine is mainly aimed at testing racing tires. The fact that Pirelli is the tire supplier of more than 350 motorsport events required the commissioning of machines capable of reaching extreme speeds in really challenging conditions such as races or record attempts of road cars. In these environments, it is imperative to apply even more stringent security conditions and ensure security through special testing processes. The High Speed Tester is also capable of handling extremely high torque and acceleration inputs, similar to those seen in a track-driven hypercar.
The High Speed Tester was designed with functions to evaluate the behavior of tires at high speeds and ensure the reliability of outdoor testing in the next step. Thanks to this machine, it is possible to test the tires as if they were used on the straights and corners of the Autodromo di Monza or Nürburgring Nordschleife tracks, but with the simulation of conditions much more severe than the reality. In this way, it is aimed to protect the integrity of the tire within a sufficient safety margin in many different usage conditions.
