Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant (NCCP), a subsidiary of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom, the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation, won the tender for the supply of more than 100 kg of lithium-7 hydroxide by the Brazilian company Eletronuclear. This product will be used in the reactor cooling system of both operating power units of Admiral Alvaro Alberto NPP (Angra NGS).
NCCP’s participation in the tender was provided by Rusatom International Network. After the signing of the contract, the product is expected to be shipped to Brazil by the end of 2023.
The high purity lithium-7 produced by the NCCP facility is used in the nuclear power industry as an additive for the primary coolant of pressurized water reactors (PWR) to improve the primary chemical properties of water. Lithium-7 is also used in the preparation of nuclear-grade ion-exchange membranes and in the manufacture of chemical markers, which are the main components. Hence, it forms part of the water preparation equipment for the lithium-7 cooling system.
Mikhail Metelkin, TVEL A.Ş Specialty Chemicals Business Unit Director, said: “Rosatom’s fuel unit is one of the leaders in the global lithium products market and is a reliable supplier. The Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant has more than 60 years of experience in the production of various lithium compounds. The company has a modern, high-tech production facility that provides a high degree of chemical purity in accordance with customer requirements.”
