Serap Minaz Kıratik, a specialist psychologist who provides counseling to couples, children, adolescents, families and adults, and works with hundreds of families and children in the kindergarten she founded; He made special statements in the MAG March issue about the psychological first aid provided to support people affected by an emergency, disaster or traumatic event.
Psychologist Serap Minaz Kıratik, who stated that “The concept of psychological first aid is not psychoeducation, treatment, diagnosis, therapy or counseling as it is thought to be”, continued as follows: “If it is understood correctly and the first aid instructions are followed correctly, it can be applied by everyone. For this, it is not necessary to work in the field of mental health. Over the years, when it was observed that many people could recover with some basic support after emergencies and no problems were encountered in their psychological health, priority was given to psychological first aid at the first stage. We can all support both children and adults in this sense. We need to allow space for children to express themselves through lots of play, and listen carefully and sincerely to adults.”
Stating that with psychological first aid, people feel safe, in the moment, and have not lost hope, they can continue to connect without being socially isolated, and aim to reduce the intense stress they experience, Kıratik said: Care should be taken, unrealistic, unrealistic, promising words to console should be avoided. Instead of a shallow and incomprehensible sentence like “I understand you,” “I cannot understand you, but I am with you, you are safe.” it would be much more meaningful. The person should be provided with a supportive, caring and safe environment and be reminded that it is very human and natural to feel whatever they are feeling. We should be careful not to insist in any way that traumatized people give details or tell what they have experienced, and we should be able to make them feel that we are with them sincerely, just to listen and support them.
