The cause of persistent headaches is sometimes not neurological, as commonly assumed, but can be due to teeth grinding. This habit, which often goes unnoticed, especially in students experiencing exam stress and individuals working in high-stress jobs, can lead to chronic headaches. Research indicates that in some people suffering from chronic headaches, the underlying cause may be teeth grinding and jaw muscle problems.
Exam Stress and High-Stress Professions Trigger Teeth Grinding
According to Periodontology and Oral Surgery Specialist Dr. Dt. Çağdaş Çağlar Laçin, teeth grinding habits can be observed in one out of every five people in society, and this condition often progresses unnoticed. The risk becomes more pronounced, particularly in students under exam stress and individuals working in high-stress jobs. Laçin points out that chronic headaches may not always be neurological or sinus-related, stating that when tests come back normal but pain persists, jaw and dental issues should be evaluated.
Laçin, noting that headaches can become a chronic problem severely diminishing quality of life for some people, made the following assessment: “Stress, insomnia, eye strain, and sinus problems are among the most well-known causes. However, in cases of unexplained headaches despite all examinations and tests, teeth grinding and jaw muscle problems should not be overlooked. Bruxism is quite common, especially among people working in high-stress jobs and students during exam periods. In recent years, we have observed a significant increase in these complaints due to rising stress levels.”

Night-Time Teeth Grinding is One of the Most Common Causes of Headaches
Stating that teeth grinding and clenching often occur unconsciously, particularly during sleep, Laçin expressed that this condition can become ingrained in muscle memory over time and persist during waking hours. “Normally, teeth only make forceful contact while eating. During the day, there should be a gap between the upper and lower teeth, which we call the resting position. Constant contact leads to excessive strain on the muscles. This can cause chronic headaches in the temples, base of the neck, cheekbones, and forehead.” Dr. Laçin also noted that complaints such as waking up tired, sounds from the jaw joint, tooth sensitivity, ear pain, and tenderness in the gum line areas can accompany teeth grinding.
Causes and Symptoms of Teeth Grinding Should Also Be Considered
Stating that teeth grinding problems do not develop due to a single cause, Laçin said that stress, anxiety, intense pace of life, and sleep irregularities are among the most common reasons. Laçin, noting that sleep disorders such as snoring or sleep apnea can also trigger teeth grinding in some individuals, emphasized that mild bruxism may not always require treatment, but when it is frequent and severe, it can lead to significant health problems.
Dr. Laçin, stating that teeth grinding often develops without the person’s awareness, shared the following information: “Sounds of grinding or clenching teeth during sleep, worn or cracked teeth, increased tooth sensitivity, pain in the jaw and facial area, strain in the jaw joint, or pain felt in the ear despite no actual ear problems are among the important symptoms of bruxism. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should not delay a dental examination.”
Headaches Can Be Controlled with Teeth Grinding Treatment
Stating that the treatment process is generally not difficult, Laçin said that with an accurate diagnosis, the load on the jaw muscles can be reduced through custom-prepared occlusal splint therapy. He mentioned that stress management, physiotherapy applications, and in some cases, botulinum toxin applications can also support the treatment. Laçin emphasized that in cases of chronic headaches with no identified cause, instead of focusing solely on the area where the pain is felt, jaw and dental health should also be evaluated, and concluded: “Early diagnosis helps both reduce headaches and protect dental and jaw health. It is important for individuals experiencing long-standing, unexplained headaches not to neglect a dental examination.”
