Independent art space Loft Art met with art lovers with its fifth exhibition “Another Story”
Ayşe Gürkaş, Başak Güldürücü, Basako, Cihan Oral, Damla Yücebaş, Deniz Doğruyol, Deniz Yılmazlar | There are works by 16 independent artists, including Karbon, Elif İlayda Bekdemir, Emre Aksu, QucorQ, Selin Akıcı Aral, Selin Çeliktaş, Su Alara Acerol, Tarık Dayan, Tuğba Akça and Zeynep Tunçel Kahyaoğlu.

In this sculpture, which participated in the exhibition with the statue “I’m swollen (Şiştim)” and whose work I set out from the concepts of “censorship and social memory,” I can express everything we could not express as a result of our social and personal traumas by blowing the lanterns, and the statue of “I’m swollen (Şiştim)“, the imaginative reflection of the period we witnessed, is the only one. We share with you the answers she gave to the questions we asked in our interview with Selin Aral, who described her as a sculpture that multiplied over time, and the lanterns grew as they multiplied…”.
How would you describe yourself about Selin Aral’s artist identity?
•I can say that I am an artist who constantly produces and learns.
What kind of ideas and inspirations guided you during the creation of your work “I’m swollen (Şiştim) “?
•The statue of I’m Shit came out at a time when we were discussing the concepts of censorship and social memory intensively. Issues that affect our daily lives and practices, such as obstacles to art and political criticism, and the non-stop ecological slaughter, are the reasons for the emergence of lanterns.
What are the feelings and thoughts that the art of sculpture evokes in you?
•Sculpture, I guess, is a way of seeing for me. It’s a three-dimensional challenge that starts in my childhood and continues in every aspect of my life. The state of being where I lost myself but found myself again and again with every piece of work I produced.

Could you tell us about the materials and techniques you use in your art?
• Although there is no limit in material and technique, the indispensable material for me is clay, although it is mostly shaped according to figures, concepts and forms. Clay sometimes turns into the sculpture itself, and sometimes it completes its task as an intermediate material. Clay material is a material that I highly prefer in terms of both its plasticity, availability and cost. I tend towards whichever material and technique will work in harmony in three dimensions. I can say that ceramic and polyester materials are two instruments that I have been using extensively lately.
What are your thoughts on the exhibition theme “Another Story”?
•All the works in the exhibition have “another story”. While each work was telling its own story, at some point the stories turned into a single story in the same place, in integrity, with the choice of technique, form, concept and color.

Could you tell us about your future projects?
•Art fairs are next, followed by personal exhibition preparation with a long and intense working period.
What are your thoughts on how your sculpture “I’m swollen (Şiştim)” is perceived by art lovers?
•The reactions I received at the exhibition were very nurturing for me. Although I do not have such an expectation, I think that the name of the statue and what the lanterns describe in general meet semantically at some point.
Do social and political ideas influence your art?
•It is not possible otherwise.
What is the meaning of many Lanterns in your art?
•Lantern has been an enjoyable means of expression for me. It is a tool in which I examine the reflection of censorship and the memory problems it brings with it in society and even in individuals. Balloons into which we blow into everything we cannot explain the meaning of in the Shytim statue and ceramic series of the bell jars, and in which we are silenced.

What is the importance of Loft Art as an independent art space for an artist?
•As artists, gallery support is an important issue for all of us. The fact that the gallery we cooperate with emphasizes “independence” liberates both sides. In this sense, Loft Art is a gallery I work with with pleasure.
We thank Selin Aral for her answers to our questions.
