The blood vessels that supply the heart run on top of the heart. When a part or all of the blood vessels pass through the heart muscle, it is called “Myocardial Bridge Disease” or “Myocardial Bridge”. This condition can cause symptoms similar to heart artery blockages by compressing the vessels during the heart’s contraction.
Diagnosis is usually made through angiography. Initially, patients’ symptoms are tried to be controlled with medication. However, stent or surgical intervention may be required for patients who continue to have symptoms despite medication. The use of stents has disadvantages as it carries a risk of early blockage due to the pressure of the band.
Surgical treatment is considered a permanent solution. In surgical intervention, the heart muscle band is cut to relieve the coronary artery. If necessary, coronary bypass surgery can also be performed simultaneously.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mazlum Şahin, who provides information about Myocardial Bridge Disease, said the following about its diagnosis and treatment: “Myocardial Bridge Disease, which is the condition where the heart’s blood vessels pass through the heart muscle, can significantly affect patients’ quality of life. Diagnosis is usually made by angiography. Stent or surgical intervention may be required for patients whose symptoms cannot be controlled with medication. However, surgical treatment can be preferred as a definitive and permanent solution, as stents carry the risk of early blockage. Depending on the patients’ conditions, the heart muscle band can be cut to relieve the coronary artery, and if necessary, coronary bypass can also be performed.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mazlum Şahin aims to manage patients’ health in the best possible way by informing them about Myocardial Bridge Disease and its treatment methods.
