Melek Anqi Kocasinan, an international artist who is half Turkish and half Taiwanese (高安琪), is known for her striking paintings that combine mixed techniques and digital methods. Starting her education in Taiwan, Melek Anqi continued at UCLA and Yale Universities in America to obtain an MA degree. She discovered her interest in painting as a child in Taiwan when she used to draw Chinese characters like pictures. The HIROMITA, included in the collection, originated from Angel Anqi’s Asian roots, particularly her childhood years in Taiwan. When the artist was 7 years old, she felt a connection with cute characters in comic books while learning Chinese in Taipei. Having five cats currently, also inspired her to imagine HIROMITA as a cat. Furthermore, the “rooftop cat statues” in Asia shaped HIROMITA’s story. These traditional cat statues, known as “The Rooftop Tiger”, are said to eat the ghosts and bring good luck to homes.
