Psychological Counselor Funda Nur Akay discusses how to build a life after bereavement and the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder for MAG Readers.
Funda Nur Akay, who talked about how to understand post-traumatic stress disorder, said, “It may be useful to start by defining the trauma first. Traumas; It is the exposure of a person to sudden and unexpected events such as natural disasters, major accidents, war, terrorist incidents, abuse, harassment, rape, or to violence, rejection or neglect in the family, school or work environment. From post-traumatic stress disorder; It can be mentioned if the symptoms of acute stress experienced after trauma last for more than one month and the intensity and frequency of the symptoms do not decrease. We can classify these symptoms in physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioral dimensions such as sleep problems, avoidance or hyperarousal states, repetition of negative emotions and thoughts, lack of concentration and attention, and changing perception of reality.
Funda Nur Akay, who stated that behavioral changes or behaviors under her age, and sleep problems may appear in children, said, “In these cases, children’s need for trust must be met first. In addition to the above, adolescents should be encouraged for social environments and should be given duties and responsibilities appropriate to their age, as there may be situations of introversion. Symptoms are different and of varying intensity for everyone. As I just mentioned, if these symptoms persist for more than a month and their intensity tends to increase, we can talk about the necessity of expert support. In these cases, short-term, solution-focused therapies such as EMDR can be used, as well as longer-term psychotherapies may be needed.
