The Sponge City Izmir project, which was implemented by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality to combat drought and poverty, is growing step by step. İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer examined the rainwater harvesting works initiated within the scope of the project prepared with the vision of “Another Water Management Possible” due to 22 March World Water Day. Mayor Tunç Soyer, who visited the campus of the Fire Department, which was selected as a pilot region within the municipality, visited the campus in Gaziemir, drew attention to the global climate crisis.
“We need to leave wild irrigation”
Speaking in the program attended by the Mayor of Gaziemir Halil Arda, Mayor Soyer said, “This painting, which we call a global climate crisis and can no longer be out of any of us, leaves us with new disasters of nature. Drought has become a serious problem not only for Izmir, Turkey, but for the whole world. One of the most concrete consequences of global warming all over the world is drought. We also need to use our water resources more accurately, to store rainwater, to store the product pattern to be used in agricultural production correctly and to abandon the wild irrigation. ”
“The costs that the drought pay us are too heavy”
Mayor Soyer, who called for citizens to save water on World Water Day on March 22, said, “If we do not get our minds, if we do not take action as soon as possible, the costs that the drought will pay us are very heavy. So far, we have underestimated this situation. We have chosen the wrong product patterns in agricultural production. 77 percent of the water is used in agricultural production. 10 percent of industry and 10 percent are used in domestic consumption. For this reason, we have to explore the methods of using much more rational water in agriculture ”.
“It will be too late tomorrow”
Mayor Soyer stated that in a 5 -ton water tank in Gaziemir, only on the roof of the building and saving 220 tons of water per year by storing the water accumulated on the roof of the building. I recommend this to all Izmir. Even collecting rain water from the roofs provides a very serious savings. It is possible to use this water both in the sinks, in the kitchen and in cleaning. Much more methods can be developed. Many more solutions can be produced, but we need to start looking at life as soon as possible. If we don’t do it now, it’s too late tomorrow. “
Drinking water standards
Three shifts a day, including a total of 24 people working in Gaziemir firewater harvesting rain water, established rain water tank was accumulated. Then it was delivered to the purified rain water drinking water standards through the treatment unit. The treated rain water was used in kitchens, toilets and showering in the fire brigade building.
It will also be used to intervene in fires
Fire brigade car park roof harvested rainwater will also be evaluated. Water stored in the fire pool will be used to intervene in fires. The project will save 7 thousand pounds annually.
