Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum introduces a new addition to its monographic series focusing on significant contributors to Turkey’s fine arts. This time, the exhibition is dedicated to Melek Celâl, one of the pioneering female artists from the late Ottoman Empire and early Republic era, sponsored by Sabancı Holding and supported by Gilan.
Forgotten Republic Woman: Melek Celâl in All Aspects
The exhibition, which can be visited at Sakıp Sabancı Museum from December 26, 2023, to April 28, 2024, provides an in-depth look into the life and art of Melek Celâl, who displayed her first nude works at the Galatasaray Exhibitions in 1924 and held her first solo exhibition in 1935. The exhibition comprises Celâl’s paintings, sketches, designs inspired by Anatolian motifs, articles on urban planning, calligraphy, and Turkish embroideries, as well as a rich archive including critiques, books, and photographs.

Melek Celâl’s Rich Archive and Various Facets
Melek Celâl, born at the end of the 19th century in the Ottoman Empire and continuing her life in the Republic of Turkey, is one of the leading female representatives of the first generation of modern artists. While the exhibition delves into Celâl’s life, it also sheds light on the cultural panorama of the early Republic era. The exhibition includes a scientific analysis study titled “Beyond the Visible: Melek Celâl,” focusing on details such as Celâl’s technique, restoration of her works, and the structure and texture of the materials used.

Enriching the Exhibition with Educational Programs and Workshops
As part of the exhibition, educational programs will be organized, including the “In the Museum” workshop inspired by art therapy and awareness principles, where children aged 5-7 and their parents will explore Melek Celâl’s still-life works by working on color and composition.

Exhibition Information and Visiting Hours
The “Forgotten Republic Woman: Melek Celâl in All Aspects” exhibition, sponsored by Sabancı Holding and supported by Gilan, will be open for visits until April 28, 2024, every day between 10:00 and 18:00 at Sakıp Sabancı Museum Gallery -2, except for Mondays. The exhibition provides art enthusiasts with the opportunity to explore the life and works of Melek Celâl.
