The 6th episode of the program “Rengârenk” (Colorful), hosted by Zehra Aksoy, was broadcast on the Türkiye Haber Portalı (Turkey News Portal) and YouTube channel. This week’s guest on the program was the multi-talented artist Dr. Oya Gönen, who is known for her identities as a plant protection doctor, farmer, painter, and writer.

Dr. Gönen, who stated that she ended her busy professional life in 2024 and devoted herself entirely to art and writing, explained that her art journey began thanks to an idealistic art teacher during her high school years. She expressed that while she was a student focused on science and mathematics, she switched to the art department upon her teacher’s guidance and received a quality education, learning fundamental art training such as perspective, anatomy, and live model drawing in high school.

A Life Extending from Agricultural Engineering to Different Disciplines of Art

Emphasizing that she pursued agriculture and art together, Dr. Gönen stated that after completing her doctorate in plant protection at Çukurova University, she worked as a researcher at the Ministry of Agriculture and later served as the Turkey Technical Manager at Bayer Crop Science. She said that she never stopped painting and writing throughout this intense professional life, managing to sustain both passions in a balanced way through time management.

Embracing Art as a Way of Life

Defining art as a “way of life,” Dr. Gönen stated that she draws inspiration from nature, village life, and the struggles of farmers during the time she spends on her farm in Thrace. She mentioned that she mostly adopts a realistic style in her works but also creates abstract pieces; in both genres, she aims to convey social messages and draw attention to the problems of farmers and nature. She expressed that she never neglects to visit museums and workshops during her travels abroad, stating that these experiences broaden her horizons.

Books that Convey Correct Information to Children in an Entertaining Way

Dr. Gönen explained that her writing adventure began when she noticed agricultural errors in books while reading fairy tales to her grandchildren, and she aims to teach children about correct agriculture, natural nutrition, and environmental awareness within a fun adventure. In this context, she has written the children’s book series “Balarısı Sofya” (Honeybee Sofia) and “Pancarköy’ün Sırrı” (The Secret of Pancarköy), which will be published soon. She noted that she also creates the illustrations for the books herself, frequently using the soft pastel technique.

Also actively supporting social responsibility projects, Dr. Gönen stated that the income from the sale of her works is used to purchase equipment for hospitals, aid earthquake victims, and provide scholarships for students. Her works are exhibited in the Tarsus Art Museum, and as a member of the Istanbul Exlibris Academy Association, she participates in numerous national and international exhibitions and competitions, receiving awards.

Advice to Young Artists: “Do It Because You Love It, Not to Get Rich”

Addressing young artists, Dr. Gönen advised them to do art only because they love it and it makes them happy, not to enter this path with financial expectations. Emphasizing the healing and beautifying power of art, Gönen added that she will continue to share her work through the Adana Contemporary Art Fair and various personal exhibitions.

Yoğun geçen iş hayatını 2024 yılında noktalayarak kendini tamamen sanata ve yazmaya adadığını belirten Dr. Gönen, sanat yolculuğunun lise yıllarındaki idealist bir resim öğretmeni sayesinde başladığını anlattı. Fen ve matematik ağırlıklı bir öğrenciyken, öğretmeninin yönlendirmesiyle resim bölümüne geçtiğini ve aldığı kaliteli eğitimle perspektif, anatomi ve canlı model çizim gibi temel sanat eğitimlerini lisede aldığını ifade etti.

Ziraat Mühendisliğinden Sanatın Farklı Disiplinlerine Uzanan Bir Yaşam

Tarım ve sanatı bir arada yürüttüğünü vurgulayan Dr. Gönen, Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi’nde bitki koruma doktorasını tamamladıktan sonra, Tarım Bakanlığı’nda araştırmacı olarak çalıştığını ve sonrasında Bayer Crop Science firmasında Türkiye Teknik Müdürlüğü görevini yürüttüğünü aktardı. Bu yoğun meslek hayatı boyunca resim yapmayı ve yazmayı hiç bırakmadığını, zaman yönetimi sayesinde her iki tutkusunu da dengeli bir şekilde sürdürdüğünü söyledi.

Sanatı Bir Yaşam Biçimi Olarak Benimsiyor

Sanatı bir “yaşam biçimi” olarak tanımlayan Dr. Gönen, Trakya’daki çiftliğinde geçirdiği zamanlarda doğadan, köy yaşamından ve çiftçilerin mücadelelerinden ilham aldığını belirtti. Eserlerinde daha çok gerçekçi bir tarzı benimsediğini, ancak soyut çalışmalar da yaptığını; her iki türde de toplumsal mesajlar vermeyi, çiftçilerin ve doğanın sorunlarına dikkat çekmeyi hedeflediğini dile getirdi. Yurt dışı seyahatlerinde müzeleri ve atölyeleri ziyaret etmeyi asla ihmal etmediğini, bu deneyimlerin ufkunu açtığını ifade etti.

Çocuklara Doğru Bilgiyi Eğlenceli Bir Şekilde Aktaran Kitaplar

Yazarlık serüveninin, torunlarına masal okurken, kitaplardaki tarımsal hataları fark etmesiyle başladığını anlatan Dr. Gönen, çocuklara doğru tarım, doğal beslenme ve çevre bilincini eğlenceli bir macera içinde anlatmayı amaçladığını söyledi. Bu kapsamda “Balarısı Sofya” serisi ve yakın zamanda yayınlanacak olan “Pancarköy’ün Sırrı” isimli çocuk kitaplarını kaleme aldı. Kitapların resimlerini de kendisinin yaptığını, soft pastel tekniğini sıklıkla kullandığını belirtti.

Sosyal sorumluluk projelerine de aktif olarak destek veren Dr. Gölen, eserlerinin satışından elde edilen gelirlerle hastanelere cihaz alımı, depremzedelere yardım ve öğrencilere burs sağlandığını ifade etti. Eserleri Tarsus Sanat Müzesi’nde sergilenen sanatçı, aynı zamanda İstanbul Exlibris Akademisi Derneği üyesi olarak ulusal ve uluslararası birçok sergi ve yarışmaya katılıyor ve ödüller alıyor.

Genç Sanatçılara Tavsiye: “Sevdiğiniz İçin Yapın, Zengin Olmak İçin Değil”

Genç sanatçılara seslenen Dr. Gönen, sanatı sadece sevdikleri ve mutlu oldukları için yapmalarını, maddi beklentilerle bu yola girmemelerini tavsiye etti. Sanatın iyileştirici ve güzelleştirici gücüne vurgu yapan Gönen, Adana Çağdaş Sanat Fuarı ve çeşitli kişisel sergilerle çalışmalarını paylaşmaya devam edeceğini sözlerine ekledi.
