The Heart of the Festival Beat in Konuralp: A New Beginning for Cinema – Konuralp International Film Festival

On the historic slopes of Düzce, where the ancient whispers of Konuralp—etched into its stones from the Roman era to the Ottoman Empire—linger in the air, a new echo was heard: the magical language of cinema. Held for the first time from May 15–18, 2025, the Konuralp International Film Festival was more than just a cinematic gathering; it was a timeless journey where past met present, culture met art, and silence met visual poetry.

🎞 A Journey Aligned with Theme and Purpose: “Imagine, Record, Watch in Düzce”

The festival positioned cinema not merely as a means of storytelling, but as a vessel of memory. The slogan “Imagine, Record, Watch in Düzce” served not only as an invitation to artists, but also as a call to responsibility: to capture the voice, breath, and depth of these lands on film.

Competitions held in three main categories — Fiction, Documentary, and Production Support — brought the diverse veins of cinema to the forefront. The “Production Support” section, in particular, was a concrete reflection of the festival’s vision to uncover local potential and nourish creation at its source.

With 2025 declared the “Year of the Family,” the festival embraced this theme with particular sensitivity. A Special Award of 60,000 TL, designated by the Governor’s Office, was granted to a film that portrayed the family not merely as a narrative theme but as a foundational pillar in humanity’s search for meaning. This was a powerful gesture—one that reminded audiences that cinema is not only a form of entertainment, but also a vital force in shaping collective memory.

🌍 Visual Waves Reaching Düzce from 81 Countries

This year, the heartbeat of world cinema resonated in Düzce. A total of 1,312 film submissions from 81 countries showcased the festival’s growing international resonance. Düzce’s nature-embraced atmosphere met the universal language of contemporary cinema in a harmonious celebration of global storytelling.

The screening venues became cinematic sanctuaries across the city: Düzce University’s Cumhuriyet and İstiklal Conference Halls, the Prof. Dr. Erol Güngör Cultural Center, Özdilek Mall, and Krempark Mall Cinemas… Each opened its curtains to a different kind of cinematic poetry. In every hall, a distinct voice from another continent echoed—Asia’s mystical rhythm, Europe’s modern solitude, Africa’s deep-rooted resilience.

🌟 Legends of Yeşilçam Lit Up Düzce

The living icons of Turkish cinema, Hülya Koçyiğit and Ediz Hun, attended the festival as guests of honor. The “Lifetime Achievement Awards” presented to them were not merely a celebration of their careers, but a heartfelt tribute to lives devoted to the art of cinema.

The humility reflected in Koçyiğit’s eyes and the grace woven into Hun’s voice offered inspiration to young filmmakers and a nostalgic breeze of gratitude to the audience. Their talks reminded us once again that cinema is not merely an art form, but a way of life.

🏆 It Wasn’t About the Winners — It Was About the Stories

On the festival’s final day, Düzce University’s Cumhuriyet Conference Hall transformed not into a typical awards venue, but into a grand celebration of storytelling.

The winning works in the Fiction and Documentary categories stood out not just for their technique, but for the power of their narratives. Awards of 75,000 TL, 50,000 TL, and 25,000 TL were given to films shaped by originality and the courage to tell unique stories. In the Production Support category, grants of 65,000 TL and 50,000 TL laid the foundation for new stories to take root and grow in Düzce.

The Governor’s Special Award granted to a film centered on the theme of “family” demonstrated that emotion and belonging remain among the most powerful themes in cinema today.

🎤 Cinema That Thinks, Speaks, and Remembers in Konuralp

The talks held throughout the festival served not only as spaces for sharing technical knowledge, but also as platforms for exploring the philosophy of cinema. Ediz Hun’s words, “Cinema is not a mirror, but a compass,” offered the audience a profound reminder that cinema is not just a reflection of reality, but a guiding force—a form of art that leads the way.

The exhibition titled “Family in Turkish Cinema Through Posters” and the Yeşilçam-themed music recital offered participants an elegant bridge between nostalgia and the present day. The evening concluded with a face rooted in history yet looking firmly toward the future.

🌿 Konuralp: The Echo of Art at the Heart of History

With this festival, Konuralp proved itself not just as a host, but as a potential new hub for cinema. Düzce Governor Selçuk Aslan emphasized the festival’s deep respect for cultural heritage, while Düzce University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. İlhan Genç spoke about how academia can seamlessly integrate with the arts.

The Konuralp International Film Festival, in its inaugural year, became more than just an event—it marked a new chapter in Turkey’s cinematic memory. This chapter was a narrative written together by stones, people, films, and dreams.

✨ And So…

The wind in Konuralp now carries not only the leaves but also the stories echoing on the screen. This festival was just the beginning. But like every great story, it started with a powerful opening.
