“Broken and Shattered” portrays the struggle of people in the earthquake zone to rebuild their lives through the story of a family. The documentary, produced by journalist Neyran Elden, witnesses the emotional world of the people in the region through everyday life scenes and conversations.
“We won’t give up, we won’t let go; we won’t sell, we won’t let others sell; we are here. We were born together with Armenians, Christians, Jews, and Sunnis, and we will die together. If we’re not here, Samandağ doesn’t exist. Samandağ is love; it won’t succumb to an earthquake.”
Grief, gratitude, sorrow, anger, and hope… “Broken and Shattered,” which has been released on GAİN, records the life of a family who still have to live in a greenhouse in their garden more than a month after the earthquake, with a simple 25-minute narrative. It shows how ordinary daily activities trigger different emotions for earthquake survivors, from going to the toilet to cooking food, and conveys what it means to lose loved ones, learn to dig graves out of necessity, become helpless, lose one’s home or newly bought car, and stand shoulder to shoulder to rise again.
“Broken and Shattered,” produced by journalist Neyran Elden, is now on GAİN.
