Sincere Confessions of a Revolutionary Who Robbed a Bank / Ömer Faruk / Yarabıçak

The book “Yarabıçak], written by Ömer Faruk, was presented to the readers under the label of Yeni Insan Publishing House.

SINCERE CONFESSIONS OF A REVOLUTIONARY WHO ROBBED A BANK

Yarabıçak is the conversation book of a “Revolutionary” who has robbed a bank and a “Multi-Hearted Rebel” who considers himself equivalent to rocks as well as all living and non-moving creatures.

The first saw the rise and fall of the Russian Revolution, lived as a fugitive for years during the September 12 Military Coup; secondly, they both participated in Gezi, the most widespread, democratic and joyful uprising in these lands, and breathed the same air as the mass of people who, claiming to be a different and superior species, destroyed nearly half of the living and non-moving species registered on earth, but were helpless in the face of the coronavirus.

These “life-weary, restless people” who have seen both centuries, both talk about their own journeys and reflect on the reasons for the accumulation of the contemporary, with the experienced sincerity of those who have come from a long way to meet at the same fire at the end of their lives, and decide to write a book together: Introduction to Underground Sky Literature. or carnival as a “counter-conspiracy association”.

Border, state, regular army, war, normal, pan-capitalism as an organization of eternal evil and elected one-man regimes and revolution as its political embodiment, as well as talking about emptiness, dust, shadow, silence, image, wild, carnival, laughter and Gypsies. This is a “cheerful and frustrating” essay that also mentions; A long footnote that justifies the unrest of the restless… Or a small sidenote that tries to join a “search for writing” that does not consent to preconceptions, with emphasis on “climbing down” and “going up”…

For those who like to swim deep rather than far…

Creepy is an interdisciplinary essay that reflects on the boundaries surrounding human thought and action and proposes to act on those boundaries themselves. While pointing out that the limits set on thought, word, body, action, time and space in order to protect what we call ‘myself’ are actually establishing that very self, he explains that he makes everyone his own executioner.

Creepy is a multi-layered text that needs to be read carefully to see and remember that freedom is a practice, not a state, and the insidious transition between being the object of and being the subject of the limits this practice targets.

Yarabikak is in favor of transgression and nomadism not only in its content but also in its style. We are faced with an agile text that is carefully written and designed to provide transitions between different ways of expression. Poetry, story, memoir, essay, philosophy, music, cinema, history… they are all intertwined. But Yarabçak is not an experimental text that is hard to read, seeks a linguistic or fictional quest.

Hakan Yucefer

Yarabçak is not a text to be understood/interpreted and talked about in a single reading. The reason is this: We have a very well-rested and distilled text in the stills. I was very excited when I first read it. I read it again, again… I still continue to read it, and will continue to… (The book has a layered plot, just like Andrey Tarkovsky movies…)

Ertekin Akpinar

Questions such as whether we are squeezing ourselves into codes even while imagining the search for a free and new world are discussed in Yarabıçak through multi-layered readings such as cinema, poetry, philosophy, sociology, and politics. Above all, I can say that we are faced with a text that has turned into a “war machine”.

Selin Onen

Ömer Faruk’s book Yarabıçak, published by İthaki Publishing, is a text that brings innovation to the essay genre with its form, style and content. It is a book that I have underlined almost every line of it, that makes you think, and from which many questions that need to be discussed brought about by modernization and capitalistization can be drawn. The text includes philosophy, poetry, song, and cinema… I must admit, no essay has ever been this close to me.

Ömer Faruk

Born in Adana (b. 1954). He worked in various jobs unrelated to his education. He received the Second Prize in the Abdi İpekçi Art Competition/Story-Novel Criticism organized by Milliyet Sanat magazine in 1987 with his critical article for Orhan Pamuk’s novel Beyaz Kale. His last stop was Ayrıntı Yayınları. He continued as the editor-in-chief of this publishing house, of which he was the founder, between November 1987 and November 2008.

He covered the conceptualization of “underground literature”, which he designed as a kind of intellectual move towards conservative values that underpin the continuation of the institutional order, with a series and watched with pleasure the acceptance of his proposal. In this series, he published the books of Jean Genet, who advocated “rebellion” as a means of building one’s self against the identity imposed by the social. [Jean Genet, who was consistently opposed to any discipline imposed by the society, to any moral code in which the established culture came to life, grew up in a reformatory and spent many years in prison.

He made a name for himself with Jean-Paul Sartre’s comprehensive work Saint Genet-Comédien et Martyr (1952; Saint Genet-Actor and Sacrifice).]

He then published Georges Perec’s Disappearance, which challenged the disciplinary grammar of writing. The novel, which was written without using the letter “e”, which is the most used vowel in French, was translated into Turkish with the ingenious translation of Cemal Yardimci, again without using the letter “e”. Radikal newspaper attacked this creativity feast, which can be seen in three or five languages around the world, from the front page, the headline, on ignorant reasons, with a no-nonsense style; He did not apologize even though all (= yes, all) of the reasons for the attack turned out to be “hollow”.

These and similar successes in publishing were rewarded with the “Publishing House of the Year” award in 2000 by Ayrıntı Yayınları by Dünya Kitap. Again, in 2004, the Turkish Publishers Association “Freedom of Thought and Expression Award” was given to him as the editor-in-chief of Ayrıntı Publishing. He contributed to the publication of more than five hundred books in twenty years, and to the meeting of one million books with readers.

This process was evaluated by Erkal Ünal in his encyclopedic study, Political Thought in Modern Turkey, with the following words: “Its evaluation varies depending on where one looks at it, but the publishing house has made a substantial contribution to the development of another left understanding beyond Trotskyism in terms of objection to the Stalinist left understanding and establishing contact with anarchism. ”

After leaving Ayrıntı Yayınları, he began to speak on his own behalf. In the “trial” competition held in memory of Melih Cevdet Anday, his book Yarabıçak was awarded with thanks.

His articles were published in magazines and newspapers such as Birikim, Evrensel Kültür, Cranberry, Milliyet Sanat, Red, Varlık, Birgün, Hürriyet, Radikal, and Taraf. A children’s book named Defne Tree ve Orman Kardeşliği (Yapı Kredi Publications, 2012; tenth edition 2022), which is designed as a collective work on philosophy, politics and art from the perspective of Deleuze & Guattari, edited by a daughter (ed:Ömer Faruk, Chiviyazıları, 2016) ) and The Dignity of Speaking on Behalf of Others (Altıkırkbeş Yayın, 2019; second edition 2021; third edition Yeni Insan Publishing House, 2023), Love and Erection “Aşk” (Altıkırkbeş Yayın, 2019; second edition Yeni Insan Publishing, 2022), Chaos as a Creativity Possibility (Sixtykfive Publications, 2020; second ed. Yeni Insan Publishing House 2022), Garbage as a Tool of Humiliation (Yeni Insan Publishing House, 2022), Yarabıçak: Sincere Confessions of a Revolutionary Who Robbed a Bank (İthaki Publications, 2014; extended second edition New Human Publishing House, 2023) has trial books.
