The History and Present of the Oscars: Criticism and the Need for Change

The Oscars is one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. This annual ceremony awards prizes for categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and others. However, in recent years, many critical views have emerged regarding the Oscars. In this article, we will analyze the Oscars from a critical perspective.

Firstly, one of the biggest criticisms of the Oscars is that nominations and awards are mostly given to white men. Although the film industry has taken steps to raise awareness about racial and gender equality in recent years, the Oscars still largely remain dominated by white men. Nominations and awards for women and minority groups are rare, and this does not reflect the true diversity of the film industry. For example, in the 2021 ceremony, only one female director was nominated.

Another criticism is that the Oscars focus on films made by major studios. This makes it difficult for independent films and lesser-known directors to be nominated for awards. It is believed that the Oscars should cover a broader spectrum of the film industry. For instance, in 2019, the Marvel film “Black Panther” was nominated for Best Picture, but some critics believe that films of this genre should not be nominated for awards.

Overall, the Oscars are in need of change and should better represent the diverse voices and talents of the film industry.

Another criticism of the Oscars is that the jury takes into account popularity and commercial success when selecting nominees. This can result in more artistic and high-quality films not being nominated or winning awards. Some critics claim that the Oscars have become more focused on financial success than artistic value, and as a result, they are no longer a true artistic event. For example, in 2018, “The Shape of Water” won the Best Picture award, but it was not the highest-grossing film, and some critics thought that more deserving films should have been nominated.

Finally, the Oscars are also criticized for focusing only on English-speaking films. This prevents recognition of the diversity of world cinema and films made in different languages. It is believed that films from different cultures, especially Asian and Latin American cinema, are not adequately represented.

Despite these criticisms, the Oscars remain one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry and are eagerly anticipated every year. However, the film industry deserves to be represented in a more diverse, fair, and inclusive way, and the Oscars should continue to take steps in this direction.
