Konya Metropolitan Municipality, together with the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, organized various events in Karapınar to raise awareness within the scope of “30 March International Zero Waste Day”.
District Director of National Education İbrahim Önal, who spoke at the program held at Karapınar İller Bankası Cumhuriyet Primary School within the scope of the “30 March International Zero Waste Day”, which was started to be celebrated worldwide for the first time this year with the decision of the United Nations, said that integrating waste into human life again in a changing and developing world He said that it is important to gain the highest efficiency.
“EVERY DAY SHOULD BE A ZERO WASTE DAY”
Serdar Koyuncu, Head of the Zero Waste Department of Konya Metropolitan Municipality, stated that the items seen as garbage in homes, schools, streets and cities are no longer considered waste but a raw material that can be evaluated. Stating that they collect and recycle waste separately, Koyuncu said, “Every day should be a Zero Waste Day. Every day, we need to include these studies in a more comprehensive way,” he said.

Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change Provincial Director Hülya Şevik pointed out that the Zero Waste implementation was a project that started in 2017 under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife, Emine Erdoğan, and said, “We have done a lot of work as Konya since then. In particular, we carried out awareness raising activities in our schools. We have worked on the dissemination of this in our public buildings. We also saw that our biggest actors here are you students and our teachers. For this reason, we attach great importance to education in schools. Zero Waste has now turned into a global environmental movement.”
“ENVIRONMENTAL ENCOUNTER TO THE FUTURE”
Karapınar Mayor Mehmet Yaka said, “The environment is not a legacy to us from our ancestors; is a legacy for the future. We are obliged to protect our environment today and to entrust it to you in a healthy way. You, too, will leave the environment as clean as it is for future generations.”
After the speeches, Zero Waste training was given to the students by environmental engineers.
WORKSHOP WAS DONE WITH CHILDREN AT THE EARTHQUAKE
District Director of National Education İbrahim Önal, Head of the Zero Waste Department of the Metropolitan Municipality Serdar Koyuncu, Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Provincial Director of National Education, who also participated in the “Zero Waste Training and Workshop” organized for earthquake victims in Karapınar Sultan Veled KYK Dormitory with the aim of instilling environmental awareness in children. Manager Hülya Şevik and Karapınar Mayor Mehmet Yaka made the children happy with the gifts they distributed during the program.
