TEMA Foundation, 21 March World Forestry Day and Forest Week on March 22, World Water Day, all living things in human and nature to survive in a healthy way to survive and to become resistant to drought due to climate crisis to protect forest and water assets should be protected once again emphasized.
The United Nations (UN), this year, to draw attention to the importance of forests in terms of life and human health, the theme of March 21, World Forestry Day and Forest Week as “healthy forests for healthy people”.
Forests; There are many ecosystem services such as water production, climate regulation, protection of biological diversity, prevention of erosion, air cleaning. In addition to all these, the TEMA Foundation Chairman Deniz Ataç said that forests are indispensable natural assets for human health and prosperity. The trees in the city have filtering particles such as dust, dirt and smoke by absorbing pollutant gases caused by traffic and industry, thus protecting the population in the city from respiratory diseases. In addition, spending time in the forest; It also has stress, depression, anxiety and reducing effects. In addition, the drugs used in the treatment of many diseases, especially cancer, are obtained from plants in the forest. ”
Forest destruction threatens the life of all living things
Reminding that pressures on forest assets increases the risk of exposure to diseases, Deniz Ataç said, ısında Research has shown that more than 30 %of the diseases reported since 1960 are due to the destruction of natural areas, especially forests. Forests are vital not only for human health and prosperity, but also for all living things in our home, which is our home. In addition to the variety of rich plant species they contain, it is home to 80 %of reptiles, 75 %of bird species and 68 %of mammals. The destruction causes the narrowing of the living spaces of the species, and as a result, the destruction of living spaces. Forestation is one of the most important reasons for species losses in biological diversity. We still have to face worse scenarios due to excessive weather events, especially drought, increasing floods and floods, erosion, if we do not stop this process on our planet, which is still 10 million hectares of forest destruction every year.
Let’s protect our forest assets against drought and increase the number
In these days when we started to experience the effects of the climate crisis as drought, the importance of forests in terms of fresh water supply is increasing rapidly. Pointing out that water is an indispensable natural asset in terms of human health, such as our forests, Deniz Ataç said, “Analysis shows that 30 %of water basins covered with forests produce 25 %more water than forest amounts. This means that water production in that basin can continue for longer periods and may be an advantage for the continuation of water assets in that region, especially in arid periods. However, as a result of the destruction of the forest cover due to forest fires and land use change, the movement of water between the earth and the atmosphere is constantly deteriorating. Due to the wrong policies under the management of water assets, it is difficult to access clean and sufficient fresh water, which is of vital importance for all living things. ”
Protection policies should be developed for the establishment of the right to access to clean and adequate fresh water in our country, which is accepted in “water lack of water ,, and said: In order to become resistant to the drought due to the climate crisis and to maintain life, as well as protecting our forests, all kinds of activities that will cause the shrinkage of forest areas, deterioration of the forest cover or the integrity of the forest ecosystem should be abandoned. ”
